Here are the main brands/companies Elon Musk founded or co-founded during his entrepreneurship journey (in roughly chronological order):

Early startups (sold)

- Zip2 (co-founded 1995/1996 with his brother Kimbal Musk and others) — Online city guides, maps, and business directories for newspapers. Sold to Compaq in 1999.

- X.com (founded 1999) → became PayPal (after merging with Confinity) — Online banking/payments. Sold to eBay in 2002. Musk was a co-founder and early CEO.

Major companies he founded or co-founded (still active or key in his career)

- SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies, founded 2002 by Musk) — Rockets, spacecraft, and satellite internet (Starlink). He is founder, CEO, and chief engineer/designer.

- Tesla (founded 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning; Musk joined as major early investor in 2004, became chairman, then CEO, and is legally recognized as a co-founder) — Electric vehicles, energy storage, and solar.

Notes:  

Musk is most accurately described as the founder of SpaceX, X.com, The Boring Company, and xAI, and a co-founder of Zip2, PayPal (via X.com), Neuralink, OpenAI, and (by legal/court recognition and company materials) Tesla. Starlink is a SpaceX division/product rather than a fully separate company he independently founded.  

His early exits from Zip2 and PayPal provided the capital that funded SpaceX and his Tesla investment.
