Mr. Chicken Rice: The British Teen Who Found His Calling in Singapore's National Dish
SINGAPORE — A British teenager has become a local sensation, charming diners in Singapore with his passion for one of the country's most beloved dishes: Hainanese chicken rice.
Dubbed "Mr. Chicken Rice" by his friends, 14-year-old Joshua Alexander Jun Wei Gilby's love for the dish is so profound that it led him to land a dream part-time job at a popular chicken rice restaurant.Gilby, a student at United World College South East Asia, has been a regular at Nam Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant since he was five. His weekly visits with his Singaporean grandmother fostered a deep connection to the dish, which he affectionately calls his "ultimate comfort food." His curiosity about the secret recipe eventually turned into a desire to work at the eatery.
After being initially turned down for being too young, Gilby's determination paid off a year later. From July to August, he worked twice a week, learning to take orders, clear tables, and even prepare ingredients. His enthusiasm and effort, including brushing up on his Mandarin to speak with customers, quickly made him a social media star after Nam Kee posted videos of him online.
Gilby's story is a testament to the universal appeal of Singapore's national dish. His passion and hard work have not only made him a local celebrity but also a symbol of how food can transcend cultural boundaries and bring people together. While his friends now affectionately call him "Mr. Chicken Rice," Gilby has bigger dreams. He hopes to one day open a chicken rice shop of his own, a tribute to the dish that has become such an important part of his life.
